The woodwind quintet from Sweden.
The Arctic 5 Woodwind Quintet was founded in the summer of 2015 in Piteå, Northern Sweden by hornist Emma Wahlström and flutist Anna Swedén. Originally formed as a musical gathering of friends, the quintet quickly became a standout ensemble and shortly began performing professionally throughout Sweden and the United States. In 2018, the quintet became a trans-Atlantic ensemble and was awarded a two-year residency as the graduate quintet-in-residence at Montclair State University (MSU) in New Jersey. At MSU, the group has had the privilege of working with Jeff Scott of Imani Winds, Allison Loggins-Hull of Flutronix, clarinetist Ben Baron, and the Montclair Woodwind Quintet.
Now joined by bassoonist Lina Nilsson, clarinetist Ellen Ivansson, and oboist Alejandro Briceño, the group seeks to actively represent and explore their Scandinavian heritage through energetic and engaging concert programming. The quintet continually celebrates their culture through performances at the Swedish Church of New York and the Scandinavia House - The Nordic Center in America. In 2015, they gave the world premiere of Swedish composer, Jörgen Häll’s piece “Breeze,” and as part of their mission, they continue to actively work with living Scandinavian composers.
This summer, the quintet will participate in the Imani Winds Chamber Music Festival at Mannes School of Music and next season they will make their Carnegie Hall debut at Weill Recital Hall.
